Thoughts; Army

Let me express how I feel about being a man VS sergeant.

Alot of times, man will always complain about how a sergeant's life is always alot better. Which may or may not be true depending how you look at it. To me I feel that, as a man, even though you have to follow the orders of your commanders, you don't really have to worry much about how things are being carried about. All you have to do is- follow orders. As simple as that. You don't have to care about anything else, just get the job done. On the other hand, being a commander is alot more different. You have to worry about everything thing else, like how things are done, who to do it, and apart from all these, this exclude the problems that your man may/may not give you!

Personally I feel that, a sergeant has ALOT more freedom as compared to a man. There are alot of things which a sergeant can CHOOSE to do or not, but on the opposite end, a man only can follow orders. So sometimes, me being a man, I cannot stand how sergeants carry out their duties or the way they decide to get things done. For example, a sergeant have the freedom to do so many things, lets say if you can't do COS/DS duties, you can always get your fellow commanders' help to rotate or help you tank. However from my point of view (a man), when we're tasked something to do, you have to do it. In the worse case, is when the other man don't want to do, and you always have to end up tanking all the shit. 'Cause at the end of the day, if the job isn't done, all kena scolded, then how? Still must do right. I'm sure some of you can relate to this, always end up tanking all the shit. Worse is, when some people do half-fuck shit, and you do the proper way, they don't get punished or whatsoever. Then you feel damn sian, like why must I do properly when others can do it half-fuck.

Double standards much.

Next, a sergeant can choose, as and when they want to go canteen breaks, or like OTOT gym or any other activities, but as man, we need to always ask, request permission or wait only until the sergeant decides to give privileges then only will we have. The kind of freedom a man has as compared to a sergeant really very huge contrast. In some places the kind of freedom a sergeant has, really damn scary in comparison to a man.

Then again, from a commanders' point of view, with power comes with responsibilities. Some people just don't know how to handle the power and trust given to you from above or even your own man. Similarly, as a commander, it is always important to trust your man. Know who to trust, and when to let loose and be flexible. I mean, come on lah, even if you want to save yourself from trouble, also don't need to go to the extend of being so selfish and only caring for yourself. You should always be genuine about treating your man well. As long as your intentions are real, I'm sure your man will follow your orders and treat you with utmost respect that you deserve. It is also very essential that you need to see yourself as a commander, and act like one.

However there is something that I strongly feel; Doesn't mean being a man means you're not a good leader and likewise, doesn't mean you're a sergeant means you're a good leader.

We all know that, some people got into SCS/OCS is purely because of IPPT/system was fucked up. Or there's some 'hidden talent' that apparently SAF sees in you which almost the whole world can't understand or realize. So don't be complacence that just because you have that rank means you are always right. Always have the learning attitude and be humble.

I always believed that; if you're good, people will know it. You don't have to even make the effort to show people that you're good, because time will tell. So to all the fellow man out there who couldn't make it to command school, fret not yeah! You can always be a great leader in many different ways! Of course, I'm thankful to all the commanders out there who have been doing their job well, and treating their man like their own. Really appreciate the efforts and really look up to you.

For me, I was actually suppose to go OCS, but decided to reject command school due to eye problem. Long story short, and sometimes I ask myself, whether if I did made right decision. Wrong decision? Regrets? Maybe. Its just that feeling where, you know it could make alot of difference to your life. Well with that said, if I really did decide to go, I will go SCS instead of OCS but sadly I have an health condition.

So to all sergeants/sergeants-to-be and even officers/officers-to-be, don't treat your man/commanders like shit! Because without them, its like balloon without air- useless. Remember, teamwork! Only then SAF and even society will be a nicer place to be in.
